NYFOS "Gracias a la Vida
NYFOS continues its Mainstage season with Gracias a la vida, a musical tour of South America, with songs from Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. at Merkin Hall. The program features Ecuadorian tenor César Andrés Parreño and Bolivian soprano Shelén Hughes, with Steven Blier as pianist and host.

Ana María Martínez, Soprano and Myra Huang, Piano
Grammy Award-winning soprano Ana María Martínez has captivated audiences worldwide in some of opera’s most iconic and intriguing leading roles. Recent highlights include Donna Elvira in Don Giovanniat the Metropolitan Opera, the title role in Florencia en el Amazonas with Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Mimi in La Bohème in San Diego Opera’s first-ever-drive-in opera. Future performances include her portrayal of Frida Kahlo in Gabriela Lena Frank’s El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego for Los Angeles Opera. Hear the voice that Opera News says “harkens back to the golden age” as Martinez joins forces with Myra Huang, one of her generation’s top collaborative pianists and director of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Artist Development program.
César Andrés Parreño will be a featured singer in this recital.

Duncan Williams Voice Competition
Parreño will perform in the final round of the inaugural year of the Duncan Williams Voice Competition for Black and Latinx singers Emerging Artist division.
The competition is exclusively for Black and Latinx singers.
“The competition is named for baritone Todd Duncan and soprano Camilla Williams, the first African-American singers to sing with a major United States opera company when they made their debut with New York City Opera.”
World Premiere of Gallinek's "The Barren Darkness of His Heart"
Parreño makes his Alice Tully Hall in the world premiere of Jordyn Gallinek’s The Barren Darkness of His Heart with the New Juilliard Ensemble in the AXIOM concert series, conducted by Jeffrey Milarsky.
The Magic Flute (Tamino)
César returns to Opera Theater of Saint Louis to record an educational video project version of The Magic Flute as Tamino.

Falstaff - Giuseppe Verdi (Dr. Caijus)
In his Aspen Opera Theater debut, Parreño will portray Dr. Caijus in their production of Falstaff by Giuseppe Verdi alongside world renowned bass-baritone Bryn Terfel as the the titular role.
World-renowned Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel, who has truly inhabited the titular role of Verdi’s comedy to become the Falstaff of our time, joins the artist-fellows of the Aspen Opera Theater and VocalARTS program. The comic opera in three acts—staged for the Benedict Music Tent—follows the misadventures of Sir John Falstaff, the portly knight who attempts to seduce two married women to gain access to their husbands’ fortunes. Based on Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor and scenes from Henry IV, parts 1 and 2, the work was Verdi’s final opera.

Harvey Milk - Stewart Wallace (Dan White cover)
Based on the true story of Harvey Milk, this opera delves into the tumultuous era of the 1970s to trace one young man’s rise to lead a movement. During his time as the “Mayor of Castro Street,” Harvey Milk fought for the rights of the disenfranchised…and paid the ultimate price for his work to advance those freedoms. Through Milk’s legacy, we are reminded that we are more united than divided, regardless of our background.

Carmen - Georges Bizet (Le Remendado)
Making his Opera Theater of Saint Louis debut, Parreño will perform the role of “Le Remendado” in their production of Bizet’s Carmen.
Free, rebellious, and beautiful, Carmen is the most desired woman in town. Every man wants her, and every woman envies her. Sparks fly when Carmen meets the young soldier Don José, and they quickly begin a passionate affair. José is ready to sacrifice everything for Carmen: his reputation, his career, even his family. But when Carmen leaves José for the handsome bullfighter Escamillo, a tangled web of lust, obsession, and jealousy play out to fatal effect.
Liederabend at Juilliard
“From Iberia to Latin America. A Journey Through the Spanish Language”
The Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts joins the Collaborative Piano Department for the Liederabend Series. Each Liederabend concert features singer-pianist duos performing song repertoire. Additionally, these concerts are prepared by a Juilliard faculty or guest faculty member. This Liederabend was curated and coached by Javier Arrebola.

Caramoor’s 2022 Vocal Rising Stars perform love songs from Brazil, Germany, France, and the United States; each chapter begins with a virtuoso duo-piano overture. Music by Villa-Lobos, Brahms, Fauré, Milhaud, Gershwin, and many others.
Schwab Vocal Rising Stars Residency at Caramoor
The 2022 Schwab Vocal Rising Stars perform love songs from Brazil, Germany, France, and America; each chapter begins with a virtuoso duo-piano overture and features music by Villa-Lobos, Brahms, Fauré, Milhaud, Gershwin, and many others. The annual Schwab Vocal Rising Stars program features four young singers and a pianist selected by Artistic Director Steven Blier for a week-long residency at Caramoor. The week includes daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops, culminating in this performance featuring the results of their intensive work.
The Rake's Progress - Igor Stravinsky (Tom Rakewell)
Parreño will star as Tom Rakewell in a reimagined version of The Rake’s Progress with Juilliard Opera. Taking place in the Rosemary and Meredith Wilson theater at Juilliard in a production directed by Louisa Muller and conducted by Mark Shapiro.

Juilliard Opera presents the New York staged premiere of Luigi Rossi’s L’Orfeo with period-instrument ensemble Juilliard415, conducted by Avi Stein and directed by Mary Birnbaum. The three-act tragicomedy features a libretto by Francesco Buti and was created at the Palais-Royal in Paris on March 2, 1647.

Restart Stages at Lincoln Center brings back live performances to NYC this spring!
As part of this revival of performing arts in New York City, The Juilliard School will present: “Juilliard NOW”.
Cesar Andres Parreño and Seonwoo Lee will perform a set of selections from the Opera L’elisir d’amore by Gaetano Donizetti in the first half of the Juilliard NOW program.
“This open house features a program of opera arias, scenes, and song repertoire presented by students from Juilliard’s Ellen and James S. Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts. It will also include a performance by the Ulysses Quartet, which serves as Juilliard’s graduate resident string quartet and whose members are Lisa Arnhold Fellows. One of the most prestigious programs for educating singers, the Marcus Institute offers young artists programs tailored to their talents and needs. Notable alumni include Simon Estes, Renée Fleming, Leontyne Price, Risë Stevens, Tatiana Troyanos, and Shirley Verrett as well as more recent graduates Paul Appleby, Julia Bullock, Sasha Cooke, John Holiday, Isabel Leonard, Erin Morley, Susanna Phillips, and Davóne Tines.”
